What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are commonly, small titanium screws that are fixed into the jawbone, which in effect, acts like the root of a natural tooth.

An even smaller titanium extension is then secured to the implant and a new Dental Crown (or tooth cap) is secured over the dental implant. This Dental Crown can be made of robust porcelain or ceramic and will be professionally matched to the colour of your natural teeth.

Dentistry is constantly changing and evolving. as technology expands and improves, it's you as the patient who will reap the great benefits. Implant dentistry is one of the most exciting, innovative, and progressive of the new technologies. Through the use of dental implants, a whole new range of treatment options can be offered to patients who are missing teeth. For many patients dental implants are the best possible way of restoring a natural looking smile.

Dental implants are the alternative to a removable denture or even a gap left due to a missing tooth. With the implant you have the freedom to use your teeth as natural as possible, where as with other methods of replacement tooth option they are not as reliable.  The implant offers the security of a fixed replacement which once in will not come out, and stops any embarrassing moments which could occur with a removable fitting alternative.

Dental implants are artificial devices used by dentists to replace missing teeth. Implants  come in many different sizes and shapes.
Implants which rest on top of a bone are called subperiosteal implants.

Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant sounds like a imposing and difficult treatment. In fact, the process can be simple.
A natural tooth consists of a crown and a root. The crown part is the part of the tooth which can be seen above the gum tissue. The root is hidden under the gum tissue, and within the bone. It is the root which secures the natural tooth to the jawbone.

In order to replace a missing tooth, the dentist must re-create the crown portion, and choose the best method for affixing it within the mouth. Dental implants were developed for this purpose.

Hopefully with the help of the dentist any questions you have will be answered in the consultation.
